Hi all!
I've started up a Symbian group here on VOX at http://symbian.groups.vox.com. Since there are so many Nokia related groups here on VOX, I thought it would be good to have everyone under one umbrella to share ideas, thoughts and stories with.
All aboard!

PS
I thought the N93 theme was the best branded theme. I'm very open to debate for changing it.

- $200 - 720P video camera
- $100 - 8MP stills camera
- $200 - 16GB media player
- $100 - GPS
- $100 - phone
- $100 - PDA
That's $800 worth of stuff all in one gadget. Amazing.
I've had my Nokia N800 for a few months now. I've gotten into a routine in my use for it.
My main use for it is the Video Center. I get my daily shows like Rocketboom, MoBuzz, Tekzilla and GeekbriefTV and weekly shows like Cranky Geeks. Shows from Revision 3 coded with Quicktime Small play back in full widescreen on the N800. Geekbrief TV has the best quality video of any show I've seen available without need for conversion. Mobuzz works great with its PSP feed and is a very close second in quality.
My second use is for Jaiku. Using an app called Mauku, I can keep track of my contacts all day long with a great finger friendly interface.
My third use is for internet browsing. The N800 is really great at handling message boards. Unfortunately, the N800 is not robust enough for Google Reader. Using the mobile version works very well, but doesn't have the ease of use of the full version.
Fourth is IM. It takes a little bit of hacking with Red Pill mode to get the IM client to support multiple protocols, but having AIM, Yahoo, MSN, GoogleTalk and more all in one app is great.
The fifth most common use is weather. This is something my N800 does better than my N95. With OmWeather, I have a 7 day forecast with current weather conditions. I really wish someone would make a good weather app for S60 that could have an Active Standby plug in.
Occasionally, I'll use Canola to listen to music, but I usually use my N95 for that. I don't plan on using the N800 as a music device until A2DP is fully implemented.
Last week, I vox'd about video ringtones for S60 Feature Pack 1
Recently this site was featured on techmeme.
It adds a simple right-click-save-as link on youtube videos.
Hook up your phone with the USB cable or bluetooth and you can save directly to your phone.
Remember to save the files with the .mp4 file extension
Sometimes the videos you save don't work. If the video doesn't playback, it will need to be converted. Its a good idea to down convert the file to .3gp using the Nokia Video Manager for PC or Nokia Multimedia Transfer for Mac.
Tip: Cartoon intros make for great ringtones
Most S60 FP1 phones support native video ringtones. Lately, I've been downloading mp4 videos from youtube and using them as video ringtones. Typical file sizes range from 5mb to 20mb. This isn't too bad, considering how huge memory cards have become.
I recently found this great website: http://vixy.net/rawvideo/
What it does is take the url of a youtube video and finds the .mp4 version and makes it a downloadable file. Then I transfer the file from my computer to my N95. I occasionally run into some videos that dont play and require conversion.
It is possible to do this from the S60 Web Browser, but even with a bluetooth keyboard, its quite a pain to do.
What I'd love to see in the future is for an application like emtube or mobitubia to use .mp4 files instead of .flv files. Or maybe for the OS to support .flv video files as video ringtones.
Techcrunch recently reported that video is coming soon to flickr.
Share on Ovi already supports pictures, sounds and video.
These are 2 of the services, along with VOX, offered with the Share Online application for S60.
When I go through a contact's recently added items I only get a thumbnail for anything that is not a picture.
If its silverlight or flash lite 3, I think Nokia will find a way to integrate streaming video into Share Online.
Instead of just a thumbnail image, I'll be able to click a shared item on either flickr or Ovi and watch a video.
Share Online already lets you post video to Vox and Ovi. In this hypothetical future version, we should be able to just as easily post video to flickr as well.
On This Week in Tech episode 134, Leo and his guests talked about RSS feeds and podcasting.
At the 41:30 mark, Dave Winer talked about how the iPod and iTunes is an "epic fail" at podcasting. They were designed for music, not podcasts. You have to tether to iTunes to get podcasts off. Then he made 3 points about the optimum podcasting device:
- The device should have a podcatcher built in. It should work over wifi. It should work without being tethered to a computer. They mentioned this won't happen on an iPhone even with the upcoming SDK, since Apple will never let this happen. They want you tethered.
- The device should be able to put your own software on it.
- You should be able to record your own podcasts and broadcast it.
Dvorak says a pda serves this purpose and he's almost right. One of the guests doesn't think such a device will exist until 5 years from now. S60 phones, like the Nokia N95, do all this and more.
- S60 has a great podcasting app that can do scheduled downloads over wifi. You can delete files when you're done. You can search by genre or add the RSS feed manually. It's so much better than iTunes, but hardly anyone knows about it.
- S60 is open to new features. The SDK is already here.
- You can record up to an hour with the built in sound recorder on the n95. With 3rd party software, you can record in mp3 or other formats.
You can listen to TwiT 134 here:

Themes were added to solve this problem. Using a theme, you could set an image to fill the entire background. A problem is that images set for a vertical screen do not look good when in landscape format. Users would have to hunt down landscape themes or vertical ones depending on their handset. Users with screens that can rotate, like the N93 or N95, had a hard time finding themes. Except for professionally made themes like this one from the movie Cloverfield, screen rotation is a disaster.
I have found that transparent images make for the best wallpaper. They can rotate both ways and look like they are integrated with the theme. I followed the guide I found at absolute cross to make transparent png files.
Now, I can use really great themes and use transparent wallpapers to add to them. Best Profiles from SmartPhoneWare takes advantage of this line of thinking. Whenever I change my profile, my theme and wallpaper change with it.
By now you've probably heard about the new Youtube Mobile app. Point your mobile phone's browser to m.youtube.com/app to get it. If youtube wont let you download it, there's a download available at the Symbian in Motion blog here.
First, let's go into what's bad about this new app. The video quality isn't that great. It uses streaming 3gp to be compatible with many java phones. The worst part is you cant get fullscreen video.
A great alternative for S60 fans would be to get emtube. Its compatible with pretty much every s60v3 device out there and plays in fullscreen and higher quality.
But Youtube Mobile does have its good sides. It's attached to your account, so your you can watch your own videos, favorites, playlists and subscriptions.
Most importantly, it has an upload feature. This is great, since MMS has size limits. Shozu is an alternative, but that app is too unstable. It would be great if youtube would work with Nokia's Share Online app.
If you want to upload videos, Youtube will repeatedly ask you to accept. This is really annoying and there's a simple way around this.
Go into your Tools and open the App Manager. Open the Youtube app and change all the settings to either "Ask Once" or "Always Allowed". This will make uploading videos from your phone very easy.
Youtube is a pretty great app from the folks at Google. Last year, Google made Google Maps a full S60 app. Let's hope they make a full S60 version of Youtube Mobile that supports fullscreen video.
