I'm a big nine inch nails fan. I have pretty much every release in CD format.

nine inch nails front man Trent Reznor has opened me up to a lot of new music. A few months back, he posted this silly video with a really great song.

He posted another video recently with the same song. It's called "Music Makes You Lose Control" by Les Rythmes Digitales. Normally, I would look on the Pirate Bay for this song. But today, I decided $1 wont kill me and bought it from AmazonMP3. Within 10 minutes, I had the program installed and was doing my own silly dances.

I guess if I was an iTunes user, this wouldn't be so new to me. But the only Apple product I have is a keyboard. I don't like the walled garden of it all.

The .mp3 file arrived with 230 kbps quality. I'd have preferred 320, but 230 is still very good. What I love about AmazonMP3 is that its DRM free mp3 files.

I think I can like Nokia's Comes With Music. I love the idea of hearing a song and then just downloading it right to the phone. Nokia Comes With Music is supposed to give you 1 year of access and then you can keep the music. The only problem is that if I upgrade, I would have to download my music all over again.

Just out of interest I decided to see how long it might take me to find and purchase that same track on the iPhone using the WiFi music store...

1. Two 'clicks' to get to the WiFi music store app and into the search box (5 seconds)

2. With the help of live searching I just typed 'music makes' and the first item on the list was "Music Makes You Lose Control" (10 seconds)

3. Hit the 'Buy Now' button and download the iTunes+ 256kbps AAC (not DRM!) (37 seconds)

4. Hit the 'Purchased' button at the top of the screen and then select the downloaded track (5 seconds)

In total from the moment I decided to conduct the experiment to the time the song started to play... 57 seconds! And don't forget that the minute I plug my iPhone into my Mac to charge that song will be synced to iTunes. Oh, and I can also play it on my N95 and PSP.

For me the the WiFi Music Store on the iPhone and iPod Touch is probably the best example of how all phone apps will work one day.

I wonder how long would it take you to download a song from Nokia's music shop to your phone? And could I download AmazonMP3 music on my N95?

The Nokia Music Store on the N95? That would take about 2 minutes I reckon - again very quick, but the key difference is that my Nan could do it on the iPhone in about the same time as me (without any instruction), she would not stand a chance on the N95 - not in a million years!

I'm not saying that my Nan is a key market that Nokia should be focusing on, but it just goes to illustrate how far behind Apple most of the industry are when it comes to the user interface and solution simplicity.

I got around to copying it to my N95. Plays fine. You need a PC client to download AmazonMP3, so you cant download directly from an N95.

I have an Amazon credit card, so I get triple points for the $1 I spent.
Rack up 2500 points, get $25 in Amazon money. I have some gift certificates ready to be spent for when Amazon should have the black N82 in stock next month. Plus I'll get free shipping.
